SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -
Police arrested two Springfield men Tuesday after an astute neighbor watched the men break into a home and steal a clothes dryer and fish tank.
A Johnson Street resident was looking out his widow about 1:15 p.m. when a black pickup truck backed into his neighbor's driveway near Ranney Street in the city's Forest Park neighborhood. The eyewitness told police the two men then pried open a side door with a crowbar and loaded the items into their truck, according to Springfield Police Sgt. John Delaney.
Knowing nobody was home at the time, the alert neighbor dialed 911. Police had not arrived by the time the two alleged thieves were ready to flee the crime scene, so the neighbor followed the thieves until they pulled into a gas station at the corner of Orange and White streets, Delaney said.
Police responding to the break-in were flagged down by the neighbor and directed to the truck with the dryer in the bed.
"Having good neighbors is the best crime prevention tool a homeowner can have. If anyone observes any suspicious activity on their street, do not hesitate to dial 911," Delaney said.
Police arrested Javier Serrano, 29, of 128 Newfield St., and Victor Sanchez, 47, of 50 Montmorenci St. They were both charged with breaking and entering and larceny from a building, according to an arrest report. Both men were held overnight and arraigned in Springfield District Court Wednesday.
