LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

It's official. Dave Rice will be the head coach of the UNVL men's basketball team through at least the 2018-19 season.

Rice's two-year contract extension was approved on Friday by the Nevada System of Higher Education Board of Regents.

The move follows a scare last month when it briefly looked like Rice was going to leave UNLV for South Florida.

Rice's contract includes an incentive package based on academic and athletic success. The coach had three years remaining on his previous contract.

Rice will enter his fourth season at UNLV starting in the fall. He has compiled a 71-32 record, which ranks him second-all time at the school, only behind the legendary Jerry Tarkanian.

On Thursday, UNLV star forward Khem Birch announced he will leave the Runnin' Rebels for the NBA draft.
