There is a new baby giraffe visitors can view at the Metro Richmond Zoo in Chesterfield.

Jessie, a 13-year-old female Reticulated giraffe, gave birth to her fourth calf this week in the African exhibit.

The giraffe was in labor for 2 hours and 7 minutes, according to Zoo Director, Jim Andelin.

The calf is a "little" boy being measured at 6 feet tall. The boy weighs around 175 pounds, according to zoo officials. His father is Tonka.

In the past, Jessie has not taken care of her previous calves, and zoo staff has had to bottle raise them.

Miraculously, Jessie allowed her calf to nurse, and everything seems to be going well so far. The calf was born in front of numerous zoo visitors.

However, mom and baby will be kept inside their shelter for the next few days to allow more private time for bonding, according to Andelin.
