NORTH LAS VEGAS, NV (FOX5/AP) -

A Utah woman who police said hit eight people with her car outside of a North Las Vegas church last year was sentenced to at least three years in prison on Tuesday.

North Las Vegas police said Nyakeuth Tear, 18, drove her car through the crowd on Aug. 8, 2013, outside the Iglesia de Cristo on Losee Road and then ran from the scene. According to an arrest report, Tear admitted to stopping and then trying to drive away on a dark industrial street. Police caught up with her after she crashed her vehicle and ran toward Interstate 15.

"I'm very sorry. I've always run away from my problems, and I realize I can't do it, that I want to take responsibility and make everything right. I never meant for this to happen," Tear said.

Lorenzo Alavez, 54,  was critically injured, and a pregnant woman and six others were also hurt, according to police.

"The condition he's in, it's really hard to see him and know that inside he's frustrated because he wants to walk and he wants to do a lot of things, and he does try sometimes but we tell him no because [he's] not at that point yet," said Alavez's daughter, Cathy Alavez.

In February, Tear pleaded guilty to leaving the scene of an accident.

On Tuesday, a judge sentenced a crying Tear to at least three years but up to 12 years in prison.
