Study offers hints on when to buy gas

MID-MICHIGAN (WNEM) -

Low gas prices are something just about all of us wish for. But now, new research might help us save some pennies at the pump.

It's all about which days of the week to fill up.

TV5 visited a local gas station to ask drivers which days of the week seem to offer the cheapest gas prices.

Most people in Mid-Michigan told TV5 they fill up their tanks on the weekdays. But according to a new study from gasbuddy.com, you might find the cheapest prices on the weekends.

Analyst Patrick Dehaan spoke with TV5 over the phone. He shared results of a four-year study that show prices are often the lowest on the weekends.

Dehaan says this holds true for Michigan and about two-thirds of the country. He says there are likely a few reasons why gas stations offer more competitive prices Saturdays, Sundays and even Monday mornings.

It could be stations know that motorists are hitting the road and they try to get a leg up on their competition by dropping their price. It could also be because trading floors that trade crude oil are closed during the weekends.

And one thing that analysts and drivers can agree on, predicting hikes in gas prices is always somewhat of a gamble.
