LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

Police said a 2-year-old girl stepped out into traffic outside of her home Thursday night and was struck by a minivan and possibly by another vehicle.

Las Vegas Metro police reported the incident near the intersection of Pecos Road and Dillon Avenue just before 9:30 p.m.

The Clark County Coroner's Office identified the toddler as Clara Castrejon-Jimenez from Las Vegas. Castrejon-Jimenez was 1 year and 10 months old when she died, and her death was ruled an accident.

Citing witnesses, police said the girl stepped out onto the northbound lanes of Pecos when she was struck by a Ford Windstar in the right travel lane. The driver of the minivan stayed on scene.

Police also said investigators were looking into the possibility of a second vehicle that also hit the child. That second vehicle failed to stop at the scene, police said.

The child was pronounced dead at the scene.

"We have a horrible tragedy out here," Metro Sgt. Richard Strader said. "We have a 2-year-old young child who was killed by a vehicle. A family is grieving. A driver of a vehicle is upset. It's just horrible all around."

Strader also stated officers with Metro's Child Abuse and Neglect Detail were called to the scene and the child's family home to assess the girl's living environment.

As of this incident, Metro has investigated 29 traffic-related fatalities this year.
