LAKE TOWNSHIP, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Residents of one Lake Township neighborhood are speaking out about the speed limit, saying they fear for their children's safety.

On Wednesday evening, a car on Lemoyne Road careened off the roadway and into a home. Residents say the speed limit on Lemoyne Road is way too high.

"We got to change this because they're gonna be some kids that get killed," said Jim Hicks.

"They zip around at 50, 60, 70 [miles per hour]. I've even seen them going faster maybe even upwards of 100 miles per hour in the evening. I worry about my kids. As far as them playing in the front yard we pretty much don't let them," said Clinton White.

Those who live along Lemoyne Road say the problem is so bad they actually keep extra mail boxes on hand, knowing its only a matter of time before one his hit by a car.

The speed limit on the road is 20 miles per hour near Lake High School, but increases to 55 miles per hour after a set of railroad tracks.

"We've got the same speed limit as four lane 795," said Hicks.

White says Wednesday night was not the first time a car has left Lemoyne Road.

"I'm pretty sure she was texting, but she went right through from one side of my yard all the way to the other side and took out my mailbox and she stopped but the thing is that could have been my kids," said White.

Lake Township officials say they don't have the authority to decrease the speed limit, but that they have been vigilant to catch anyone that who do speed.

The Wood County Administrator says even though they don't have the power to change the speed limit, they did put a request in for the Wood County Engineer to conduct speed study.
