LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is on a cross-country speaking tour, and got more than she bargained for while addressing a recycling convention in Las Vegas on Thursday.

Clinton was nearly struck by flying footwear.

It was difficult to tell what was thrown at Clinton just minutes into her speech, but it turns out it was a shoe and some papers.

The unidentified woman who launched the footgear was quickly escorted out of the convention hall at Mandalay Bay hotel-casino. She was subsequently arrested by Metro officers.

When the shoe was thrown, Clinton flinched, wondered aloud what was tossed at her, and then joked about it.

"My goodness, I didn't think solid waste management was so controversial. Thank goodness she didn't play softball like I did," Clinton said.

Clinton remained on the stage for about an hour after the incident, talking about recycling and free trade, among other topics. She did not discuss any future political aspirations.

Convention officials told FOX5 the woman who tossed the shoe at Clinton was not affiliated with them in any way. There was no word on how she bypassed security.
