LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

Clark County School District police insisted a confrontation between two girls that hospitalized one of them was not the result of bullying.

The school district's police department addressed details during a news conference on Tuesday of a fight that took place April 2 at Mike O'Callaghan Middle School. The confrontation, which police said lasted less than a minute, resulted in a 13-year-old being treated at the hospital.

Of the hospitalization, police said the girl suffered a medical episode that caused her to collapse, though, some pushing and shoving took place between she and a 12-year-old girl before it. The medical episode, police said, was not related to the fight.

Police characterized the two girls involved in the fight as "mutual combatants" with a "strained relationship" but insisted this was not a bully-victim dynamic.

Police said both girls involved were suspended from school and each could face disciplinary or criminal charges.

As of Tuesday, the 13-year-old remained in the hospital, according to police. At one point, the teen slipped into a coma while in treatment, but her condition was not disclosed at the news conference.

CCSD police also noted the incident, which took place in the quad of the campus, was not captured on surveillance video. Police said a security camera was present but the fight took place in a blind spot.

The incident marked the latest fight among students at Clark County schools. The police department said they have seen a slight increase in reports of fights this year.
