LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

The mood at Mike O'Callaghan Middle School is one of sadness and fear after a teen was hospitalized Wednesday following a fight.

The girl, 13, remains in a coma at University Medical Center, according to her family.

Police continue to investigate the fight, and parents are wondering how such a violent altercation occurred on school grounds.

Ariel Zedeno, 12, said he witnessed the fight in the school's lunchroom. He said the victim was on the floor for 20 minutes before being rushed to the hospital.

"They were fighting and [she] hit her a couple of times in the head and she was trying to get back up and [she] kicked her," Ariel said.

Parent Trina Copeland pulled her daughter out of school early on Friday. She said her daughter fears becoming a victim of similar violence.

The circumstances surrounding the fight remain unclear. Some said the victim was a bully and provoked the attack. Copeland believes the victim was jumped.

"I don't believe [the victim] instigated it or egged it on. She was standing next to [a classmate], next thing you know, she was on the ground. The girl got her from behind," she said.

The school district on Wednesday issued a statement saying safety is its No. 1 priority. However, given what happened, Copeland isn't convinced.

"If your No. 1 priority is the safety of the kids, why is this girl in the hospital?" she asked.

Parents FOX5 spoke with on Friday said they'd like to see a greater police presence on campus. Some acknowledged that might be difficult given the school district's budget constraints.
