LAS VEGAS (FOX5/AP) -

A Las Vegas middle school student is fighting for her life. The girl was in a fight on Wednesday at Mike O'Callaghan Middle School, located in the northeast part of the Las Vegas Valley, according to information obtained by the Associated Press.

The girl is being treated at University Medical Center, where, family members said, she is in a coma.

On Thursday evening, the girl's family and others gathered outside the hospital to pray.

School district police said the fight involved two girls, and the teen was rushed to the hospital in critical condition.

The unidentified girl's friends visited the vigil throughout the evening. Police said the fight is still under investigation.

On Wednesday, Clark County School District spokesperson Kirsten Searer issued the following statement:

"This is a terrible situation and our thoughts are with the student and her family. We immediately began investigating this situation and will fully cooperate with the police investigation. Dr. Mike Barton, our chief student achievement officer, will reemphasize with all school employees their responsibility to ensure that student safety is the No. 1 priority."
