Downward slide for jobless rate continues

LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

Nevada's jobless rate has hit a five-year low with no signs of the downward trend ending anytime soon, according to a local economist.

"We're creating jobs even faster than the unemployment rate is falling," said UNLV's Stephen Brown. "We're among the leaders in economic growth."

The current state unemployment rate of 8.5 percent is much improved over the 14.4 percent recorded less than four years ago, according to numbers released in Washington on Friday.

"We've seen three years of sustained growth in southern Nevada, and we've seen three years of sustained growth statewide," Brown said.

At Nevada Job Connect, those looking for work have had mixed results getting hired.

One woman told FOX5 on her first day at the unemployment office she walked away with two solid leads. But Joseph Deluca, who lost his job last October, hasn't been so lucky. "I've gone to three referrals and come up to a dead end," he said.

Ben Daseler with Nevada Job Connect said he sees a light at the end of the tunnel for those having trouble finding work.

"We are seeing businesses hiring, mostly part-time, but they are bringing people on. It's definitely getting better," he said.
