Metro officer involved in shooting near Pecos and Tropicana

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department confirmed that one of its officers was involved in a shooting about 9:20 p.m. Friday.

The shooting happened on Tropicana, near Celo Lane. Police closed Tropicana between Pecos and Sandhill Road.

Police said the incident began with a call about a domestic disturbance. The responding officer saw the suspect, 49-year-old Tania Torres-Espinoza walking westbound on Tropicana near Celo Lane armed with a knife. As the officer exited the patrol vehicle, Torres-Espinoza approached the officer and raised the knife. The officer then fired two rounds, striking the suspect.

Torres-Espinoza was taken to Sunrise Hospital and is being treated for her wounds. Police say she will be booked in absentia and is charged with assault with a deadly weapon, assault with a deadly weapon on an officer, and resisting a public officer with a weapon.

This is the fifth officer involved shooting in 2014.
