LAS VEGAS (FOX5/AP) -

The Las Vegas City Council moved forward Wednesday with allowing medical marijuana dispensaries in the city.

Cannabis of the medical variety was approved by Nevada voters in 2001, but it was not until last year that lawmakers approved a measure that allows dispensaries of the drug to operate in the state.

Council members initially approved a six-month moratorium on dispensaries, but that expired Monday. On Wednesday, the city council voted 5-2 to move forward with dispensaries in the city, with Councilwoman Lois Tarkanian and Mayor Pro-Tem Stavros Anthony voting against.

The Council told its staff to begin drafting regulations for the businesses. Those regulations will include methodology for growing, testing and cultivating marijuana.

The Clark County Commission was also set to discuss the dispensaries during its meeting Wednesday.
