Woman dies after being attacked by family dog

PHOENIX (CBS5) -

Authorities in Phoenix said a woman died Friday night after she was attacked by the family dog earlier that evening.

Phoenix police spokesman Sgt. Steve Martos said the incident happened in the 16000 block of north 47th Drive.

Maricopa County Animal Care and Control spokesman Melissa Gable said the woman was feeding the dog around 8 p.m. when it attacked her.

Gable said the woman, who is the mother of the dog's owner, was taken to a local hospital where she died.

Gable said the 4-year-old pit bull was euthanized Saturday after the request came from the dog's owners. Gable added that the dog was up to date on it's vaccinations and had been neutered.

Martos said it's unclear if the woman died because of her bite injuries or if a medical condition was the cause. He added that investigators are waiting for the medical examiner's report to make that determination.
