LAS VEGAS (AP) -

A former Nevada state court judge whose courtroom conduct, disciplinary suspension and eventual removal from the bench became a rare public spectacle has died.

A Southern Nevada Health District death certificate lists the March 1 death of Elizabeth LaMacchia in Las Vegas at age 56.

Attempts to reach relatives Friday in San Francisco and Oakland, Calif., were unsuccessful.

LaMacchia was known during her brief judicial stint in 2007 as Elizabeth Halverson.

The state Commission on Judicial Discipline removed her in November 2008 for misconduct including mishandling trials, mistreating staff and falling asleep on the bench.

She blamed the allegations on vindictive colleagues and disgruntled staff.

She divorced her then-husband, Edward Halverson, and dropped the name after he was convicted and imprisoned for hitting her with a frying pan in 2008.
