Soccer player faces deportation following sex-crime conviction

Posted: Updated:

A well known player with Vancouver's Spartan Futbol Club could be deported following a recent sex-crime conviction.

Yahphol Valentin Patino-Cardena, 20, of Sherwood, was arrested Wednesday in Hillsboro without incident by U.S. Immigration and Customs enforcement officers. Officers say they will seek Patino-Cardena's deportation to Mexico.

The deportation proceedings come in the wake of Patino-Cardena's January conviction for first-degree attempted sexual abuse of a child under 14, a class C felony under Oregon law. He was sentenced to five years' probation and required to register as a sex offender.

ICE officials say legal permanent residents, such as Patino-Cardena, become subject to possible deportation if they are convicted of crimes defined as aggravated felonies or crimes involving moral turpitude.

An immigration judge will make the final determination if Patino-Cardena will be deported. He is being held at Northwest Detention Center in Tacoma pending that ruling.
