PHOENIX (CBS5) -

Phoenix police were looking for two men, one who wore a long black wig and a clear "vendetta" mask, who jumped from a car and fired at officers as they pulled the car over Friday morning.

Officers on another traffic stop at 1:30 a.m. near 29th Avenue and Buckeye Road saw the car being driven by a woman suspiciously disappear, said Phoenix police Sgt. Tommy Thompson.

Officers followed the car and tried to stop it as it drove through a Circle K parking lot near 35th Avenue and Buckeye Road, and noticed a man wearing the mask in the back seat, Thompson said.

The car came to a dead end, and a man in the front seat and the man in the back jumped from the car and ran.

Thompson said the man wearing the wig and mask turned and fired a silver handgun at two officers, but that police were "not in a position to return fire."

The man fired a second time and both men jumped a block wall and into a neighborhood, Thompson said, adding that officers recovered the wig, mask and a jacket the man was wearing.

The two officers, nine and six-year veterans with the Phoenix police were not hurt and no officers returned fire, Thompson said.

The 26-year-old woman was taken into custody and told police the two men had volunteered to help her collect money, though Thompson said police had "serious questions" about her story. There was a misdemeanor warrant out for her arrest and she was turned over to Mesa police.

Thompson said both men were Hispanic and about 5'9" to 5'10" tall and between 170 and 200 pounds.

The man in the front seat was wearing a tan ball cap, a white jersey with black numbers, a black jacket, khaki pants and white tennis shoes, Thompson said.

The other had a clear "V for Vendetta" style mask, a long black wig, wearing a black jacket and carrying a gun.

Anyone with information about the suspects is asked to call the Phoenix Police Department.
