Richmond police shut down scam called Hillbilly Sobriety Test

Posted: Updated:

Richmond police have arrested two men for using a scam called the Hillbilly Sobriety Test to steal hundreds of dollars.

Charles Wyatt and Kevin Smith each face one count of grand larceny after police say a woman reported the pair stole money from her wallet after she played the game and lost.

Players of the Hillbilly Sobriety Test have to set a beer bottle upright using a broken, plastic spork.

"It just seems so easy," says a witness who preferred to be identified as only Madison. "All you have to do is stand the beer bottle up ten times to win your money back and a prize!"

Madison admits there were rarely winners. In fact, she says she was there when a Richmond woman called police after alleging the two men stole from her.

"We had a woman who reported that she was in front of a convenience store and there were a couple guys. They had this game of chance that they wanted her to play," said Richmond Police Lt. Dan Minton.

The woman told police she lost $640 playing the game and when she refused to turn over the cash, she says, Wyatt and Smith stole it from her purse.

Madison believes the woman is lying to police. "I saw the whole thing, she's the one who blew her stack and then got mad."

The truth is for a judge to decide, but for now, Richmond Police have this warning: "If you show up in front of a convenience store and there's some game of chance set up on a cardboard table be leery of that."

Online court records show, both men are in jail and will be in court in April.
