22 deaths in southern Nevada blamed on flu

LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

Health officials raised the number of influenza deaths in southern Nevada this season to 22.

According to the Southern Nevada Health District, the flu was the cause of those deaths counted since October 2013. In all, there were 489 total confirmed flu cases since that time with 259 of those resulting in hospitalizations.

SNHD Chief Health Officer Dr. Joe Iser said the majority of flu cases are the H1N1 virus otherwise known as swine flu.

Unlike five years ago, the H1N1 strain is now part of the vaccine. Iser said getting the vaccine is the single most important thing to do to stay healthy.

The health district recommended everyone six months of age and older get a yearly flu vaccination. People 5 years old and younger, as well as adults 65 years old and older and pregnant women, are at high risk of complications from the flu.
