PHOENIX (CBS5) -

Arizona House Democrats elected new leadership Tuesday.

Rep. Eric Meyer, of Paradise Valley, was chosen to serve as the new House minority whip. Rep. Bruce Wheeler, of Tucson, who was serving as the whip, moved into the position of assistant House minority leader.

Elections for the caucus came after Rep. Ruben Gallego, of Phoenix, stepped down from his position as assistant House minority leader.

Gallego resigned to focus on his run for Congress representing Arizona's 7th District. Gallego's last day was Thursday but he formally resigned Friday.

Rep. Chad Campbell, of Phoenix, will remain the House minority leader.

Wheeler, a former Tucson City Council member, has been a member of the House since 2010. He previously served as the House minority whip. He said that he will continue to encourage the caucus to act as a watchdog for the state.

Meyer, a physician, has been a member of the House since 2009. He is also a member of the Children's Museum of Phoenix board of directors and is a former member of the Scottsdale School District governing board.

Democratic state Sen. Steve Gallardo has been in Washington all week preparing to launch his bid for the 7th District seat being vacated by longtime U.S. Rep. Ed Pastor.

Gallardo initially said he planned to remain in the Senate. But he tells The Associated Press he is now considering resigning to focus on the campaign.

Maricopa County Supervisor Mary Rose Wilcox is also planning for run in August's Democratic primary. She's also said she plan to resign.

Pastor's Phoenix-area district is heavily Democratic and whoever wins the August primary is expected to easily win November's general election.
