When the VCU Rams take to the Siegel Center this weekend, it will be the team's 50th straight sell out.
The men's basketball team has won all but 7 of the 29 games it's played. A growing number of fans all want to get glimpse of the team in action. That extra excitement is even causing some frustrations.
A ticket to see the Rams in action is hard to come by these days. It's why a Henrico boy was so excited to learn he and his friends could celebrate his birthday at a game, but what he got wasn't what he expected.
12-year-old Michael Huneycutt plays basketball for his middle school, so getting surprise tickets to see college athletes was a pretty big deal.
"Absolutely excited. Cause he wanted to see a basketball game. He gets to go see a real basketball game. He likes VCU," his father Mike Huneycutt said.
He, too, was in for a big surprise.
"My son and his friends kept looking for seats. We couldn't find any seats to sit in," he said.
The family paid $45 each for four general admission tickets.
"The response was 'We're oversold. We had to turn away 2000 students. You're just going to have a place to stand and the best place you can stand is on the ends.' That's not what I envisioned…We must have moved around the arena numerous times just trying to find a spot where we could see it and we weren't the only ones in that situation," Huneycutt said.
This weekend will be the team's 50th straight sell out. With so much excitement at VCU games, the school also sells standing room only tickets so fans can still get into the game. There's no price difference between that and a general admission ticket, but since the Huneycutt family had general admission tickets, they just wanted seats.
"Like it was at UVA, when I have a general admission ticket I can go find a place, there are normally a lot of places to sit. I could go sit with the four guys and we'd watch the game," he said.
It may very well be the growing pains of a team that's now catching a whole lot of eyes.
"So did he end up having a good birthday?" we asked.
"It was all right. He was disappointed obviously," Huneycutt said.
Other VCU fans say they're glad to see all of the excitement surrounding the games, adding many fans stand at games even in general admission seating. Scott Day with VCU says when fans complain about their experience, the school tries to respond to those complaints in hopes of improving their experience the next time. Day says there was an especially huge interest in last week's game against St. Louis but says the school is communicating with the Huneycutt family about its disappointing experience.
