Gov. McAuliffe declares state of emergency for VA

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

Governor Terry McAuliffe has declared a state of emergency for Virginia due to winter storm conditions across the commonwealth.

The action helps state agencies assist local governments in responding to the snow and ice storm making its way across the state.

"This storm could bring difficult travel and widespread power outages for the next few days," said Governor McAuliffe.  "It is also going to be very cold with gusty winds across Virginia.  Please postpone travel during the storm, charge up your mobile devices so you can stay in touch, and take time to check on your neighbors in case they need help."

Emergency response team members are monitoring the storm to help coordinate the state's response from the Virginia Emergency Operations Center.

Officials with the Virginia Department of Emergency Management are working with the National Weather Service, state agencies and local governments to coordinate response efforts. Virginia Department of Transportation crews are prepared for issues on the roads.

The Virginia National Guard is now authorized to bring up to 100 personnel on state active duty and should be in place by Monday night to respond, if needed.

Extra Virginia State Police troopers are on patrol and scheduled staff are working extended shifts to respond to crashes and disabled motorists.

The governor also asked Virginians to keep a three-day supply of food, including a gallon of water per person per day, in the event of power outages.

A hand-crank radio or battery powered radio with extra batteries should be ready for emergency information.

Generators should only be used outside in well-ventilated areas.

Stay off the roads unless you have to be out in the storm and keep emergency supplies in your vehicle.  Water, food, blankets, flashlight and extra batteries should be on hand at a minimum.
