LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

Jury selection is underway in the trial of a man accused of beating his ex-girlfriend and severing her hands with a machete.

Armando Vergara-Martinez is charged in the attempted murder of Maria Gomez. The attack happened in April 2012 and Gomez died of uterine cancer later that year.

North Las Vegas police said Vergara-Martinez beat Gomez in a grocery store parking lot and cut her hands off with a machete.

Gomez's family believes she would have been strong enough to beat cancer if she hadn't been attacked with a machete seven months before her death.

Monday morning, Gomez's brother and nephew joined about a dozen domestic violence victims in a rally outside the Regional Justice Center.

"No woman here in Nevada nor the world should endure the pain and suffering and humiliation that Maria Gomez endured," said Rebeca Ferreira, founder and executive director of Safe Faith United.

"What human does this to a woman? I just hope we get justice," said Gomez's nephew, Raul Ortiz-Zapata. He said he hopes his aunt's story helps other domestic violence victims find their voices before it's too late.

Vergara-Martinez faces three felony charges including attempted murder and battery with a deadly weapon.
