LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

Charges against a Nellis Air Force Base airman accused of abusing his 3-month-old son were amended Thursday after the infant died earlier this week.

According to Las Vegas Metro police, Andrew Leach, 31, was arrested after his son Aiden Leach was admitted to Sunrise Hospital on Feb. 2 for critical injuries.

In an arrest report, Andrew Leach, who was the only person taking care of the child at the time, told investigators that he was preparing to bathe his son when the child fell out of his arms, about three feet, to the floor. He said the boy then stiffened his arms and legs and stopped breathing.

The boy was rushed to an on-base hospital before being taken to Sunrise Hospital where doctors determined the boy's injuries were not consistent with a fall, according to documents.

According to the report, Andrew Leach suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder, as well as other psychological problems, and had been treated as recently as a week before his son was injured.

On Monday, investigators said the boy died after two weeks of treatment. The Clark County Coroner's Office was assigned to determine the child's cause of death.

Andrew Leach did not appear in court on Thursday. He was initially charged with child abuse with substantial bodily or mental harm.

Documents released after his hearing Thursday added an open murder charge as well as an additional count of child abuse with substantial bodily or mental harm.

He was being held at the Clark County Detention Center on $20,000 bond.

His next court appearance was set for Feb. 27 in North Las Vegas Justice Court.
