Wranglers to move to The Plaza in downtown Las Vegas

Posted: Updated:

After six weeks of speculation and uncertainty, the Las Vegas Wranglers hockey team has locked down a home for the foreseeable future.

Wrangles president Billy Johnson on Friday announced the team will play at The Plaza Hotel & Casino in downtown Las Vegas beginning in October.

Johnson said the team signed a long-term deal with The Plaza, which will begin with a five-year contract. The team will have an option following the initial contract.

The Plaza will construct an ice arena adjacent to the property which will be covered by a fabric tent. The team's locker facilities will be located inside The Plaza.

The arena will seat 3,500 and will be dedicated to the team. Public skating may be offered when the team's not playing. The Wranglers will play all of their home games at The Plaza.

The team has played at Orleans Arena since its inception, in 2003. In a meeting with Boyd Gaming, the owners of Orleans Arena, Johnson was told the team's lease with the arena would not be extended past the 2013-14 season.

The Wranglers were earlier granted an extension by the ECHL to lock down a new facility.

Johnson will appear on Sports Plus with Jon Castagnino on Sunday at 10:45 p.m. to discuss details of the move.
