Sheriff's Office looking for those who attended Haines City dog fight

Posted: Updated:
HAINES CITY, FL (WFLA) -

Four dogs labeled 'aggressive' now occupy kennels at the Polk County Animal Shelter after deputies came to their rescue Saturday night.

“People scattered. There were probably 30 people watching this dog fight,” Carrie Eleazer of the Polk County Sheriff’s Office said.

An anonymous tip led the Sheriff's Office to Haines City, where more than two dozen people gathered to watch the dogs fight, knowing it's often to their death.

“The dogs have not been seriously injured, however since they have been trained to fight, they are considered dangerous,” Eleazer said.

Eleazer said the crowd split so fast once deputies arrived that they were only able to nab one attendee.

“These dogfighting rings are very easily set up and just as easily broken down,” she said.

But those who fled left a lot behind. Besides all the indications of an organized dog fight, detectives have personal belongings to investigate.

“There were some cellphones left behind. So our deputies are going to diligently search through all this information that they have now and hopefully be able to locate who's responsible for putting this on,” she said.

The four dogs will not be up for adoption. They will either be humanely euthanized or put in the care of a rescue organization that specializes in housing dogs trained for fighting.
