Neither wind, nor sleet, nor snow stops the USPS

SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

Many people are able to work from home during winter storms, but some are needed no matter what the weather brings.

As the postman's pledge states: Neither rain, nor sleet, nor dark of night shall stay these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds.

It's a code letter carrier Michael Dame lives by.

"Well obviously you have your good days and your bad days," he said.

Dame has been a letter carrier in Springfield for many years, making sure his customers are happy is his mission no matter the weather conditions.

"It's my job, I like taking care of my customers. A lot of them are elderly and they have medications, so I try to make sure they get them," he said.

Trekking through the falling snow isn't easy, but after days of snow, it gets even more difficult. Dame says once all the snow is plowed it will make walking from house to house even more difficult because snow banks will be blocking the sidewalks.

That's why safety is stressed for postal service employees.

"They want us to go to work the same way we came in," Dame said.

He makes sure his clothing is appropriate for cold conditions.

"Got my snow pants on, two pairs of socks, thermals, two, three layers of clothing."

To ensure his safety during his routes, he asks his customers to make the path to the mail box clear.

"Sand and salt the stairs as much as possible, especially if you don't have handrails," Dame said.

But it's not all bad. Dame says when the weather warms up, being a mail carrier has its perks because he can enjoy the sun and get exercise.
