SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

Springfield police made two arrests after they recovered a .357 magnum handgun and rounds of extra ammunition at about 1:30 a.m. Monday.

A 1999 Buck blew through the stop sign at Clarendon Street and St. James Avenue and took off at a high rate of speed. Officers began to pursuit the vehicle, but the driver ran a red light in an attempt to elude police, according to Springfield Police Sgt. John Delaney.

The officers eventually caught up with the vehicle at the corner of Lillian and Orleans streets.

They searched the vehicle and found the firearm and additional bullets in a backpack, Delaney said.

Springfield police charged Juan Sierra, 18, of 23 Horace St., and Alexander Cotton, 20, of 88 Edgewood St., with possession of a firearm, possession of a loaded firearm and possession of ammunition.

The duo was held overnight in the Springfield Police Department jail pending arraignment Monday in Springfield District Court.
