Las Vegas Metro police identified a 15-year veteran of the department as the officer who shot and killed an armed robbery suspect in Laughlin.
Officer Samuel Solorio, 37, has been with Metro since 1998, according to police. Solorio, who is assigned to Metro's Resident Section in Laughlin, was placed on paid administrative leave.
The Clark County Coroner's Office also identified the person shot in the incident as 28-year-old Zachary Ryan Andrews.
According to Las Vegas Metro police, officers responded to a business near Needles Highway and James A. Bilbray Parkway just before 11 p.m. Jan. 31. There, police found a suspect matching a description reported by a caller.
According to police, officers began talking to the suspect, described as a white adult male, when the man revealed a handgun. Officers drew their weapons addressing commands at the suspect. In fear for their safety, one officer opened fire on the suspect. The suspect was struck and deceased at the scene.
This investigation is the first officer-involved shooting of 2014 in the LVMPD's jurisdiction.
