FLORENCE, AZ (CBS5) -

A 48-year-old inmate who has been on death row since 1993 has died.

Gregory Dickens was pronounced dead after he was given life-saving measures at his housing location at Arizona State Prison Complex-Eyman, according to the Arizona Department of Corrections.

Authorities believe his death was a suicide.

Dickens was sentenced to death on charges of first-degree murder, armed robbery and conspiracy to commit armed robbery.

He had been on death row since Dec. 17, 1993.

On Sept. 10, 1991, Dickens and an accomplice waited at a rest stop on Interstate 8 near Yuma to rob people.

Dickens instructed his accomplice to rob "appropriate victims" and "leave no witnesses."

Bryan and Laura Bernstein were robbed at gunpoint and shot at the rest stop. They died at the scene, but Bryan Bernstein lived long enough to explain the crime to a sheriff's deputy who responded.

An autopsy will be conducted by the county medical examiner to determine the exact cause of death.
