Tempe police say they've made an arrest that cracks a stolen bicycle case they've been investigating in recent weeks.
Jeffrey Barthold was apprehended Jan. 18 at his Tempe home.
Barthold is accused of buying stolen bikes from burglars and thieves, often re-painting them in attempts to disguise the stolen property and reselling them on Craigslist. Sometimes, police said, he would simply advertise them with a sign in his front yard.
Police gathered evidence, interviewed victims and neighbors and obtained search warrants leading up to Barthold's arrest.
He was booked into jail on five counts of trafficking stolen property, eight counts of possession of stolen property, one count of possession of dangerous drugs (methamphetamine), and one count of possession of drug paraphernalia.
Officers said they are working to identify other possible owners/victims of the numerous bicycles recovered that were found in the suspect's possession.
People with information are requested to call the Tempe police non-emergency line at 480-350-8311.
