Restaurant owner offers apology to veteran he turned away

MOORESVILLE, NC (WBTV) -

As Benjamin Wardrip and his service dog walked into the Hibachi Grill and Buffet Friday afternoon, they were greeted with a smile and an apology. 

"We realize that we made a mistake and we need to correct that," said Vincent Liang, owner of the Hibachi Grill and Buffet in Mooresville.

Liang told WBTV last week, when he turned Wardrip away because of the dog, he was unaware that Benjamin suffers from PTSD and has a card that verifies Beau's status as a service dog.

"He should get all the respect no matter what," Liang said.

Under the Americans with Disabilities Act, businesses are required to allow people with disabilities to bring their service animals onto business premises in whatever areas customers are generally allowed.

Looking to rectify his mistake, Liang reached out to Wardrip and asked him to come into the restaurant Friday for a gift certificate and an apology.

"Hey, Benjamin you are welcome back anytime you like," Liang told Wardrip.

Wardrip was happy to accept their apology.

"I take their apology fully," Wardrip said. "Not everybody knows the laws and that is something we need to educate people about." 

As a U.S. citizen, Liang said he is proud to serve America's veterans.
