NORTH LAS VEGAS, NV (FOX5) -

North Las Vegas police released a composite sketch of a person believed to be one of two men who reportedly attempted to kidnap a girl near a school.

According to North Las Vegas police, the 12-year-old girl told officers she was approached by two men in a maroon minivan at about 8 a.m. Dec. 18 while she was walking in the 2900 block of Las Vegas Boulevard North near Pecos Road.

The girl told police the side door slid open with a Hispanic man ordering her to get in. She said she saw two girls inside the van as well as another Hispanic man in the driver seat, according to police.

Police said the girl ran to Von Tobel Middle School for help.

In addition to the composite sketch, police released images of the vehicle believed to be involved in the reported encountered.

Police described it as an older boxy maroon minivan, possibly a Chevrolet Astrovan.

Police urged anyone with information on the case to contact North Las Vegas police at 702-633-9111 or Crime Stoppers at 702-385-5555.

As a response to the reported incident, parents were sent a letter from Von Tobel Middle School principal Jaime Ditto, reminding them to take caution when traveling to school.

In the Dec. 18 letter, Ditto listed some procedures in safely walking to school:

  • Walk in groups to and from school.
  • Never take rides from strangers.
  • If a stranger approaches you, keep a safe distance and think of a direction to run if needed.
  • Shout and yell as loud as you can.
  • Never give out your name or address to people you do not know. This is especially true on the Internet.
  • Run to a safe place, i.e., school, church, store, etc.
  • Always let your parents or guardians know where you are. Take the same route to school every day.
  • Be sure you know your parents' full names, addresses, and phone numbers.
  • If possible, get a license plate number.
