LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

The former Las Vegas schoolteacher accused of kidnapping a teen runaway appeared in Las Vegas Justice Court for a preliminary hearing on Monday.

During the hearing, the 16-year-old girl Melvyn Sprowson, 45, is accused of kidnapping took the stand, crying and largely defending the former Wengert Elementary kindergarten teacher.

Police took Sprowson into custody on Nov. 1. It's believed the two met online. Investigators connected Sprowson and the teen through emails and Craigslist information.

The teen told the court that the two had a plan to "stick it out" until she was 17, when they'd marry and she would attend school again.

She went on to tell the court that she lived with Sprowson from Aug. 28 until Nov. 1, passing the days by watching TV, reading and playing games. She stopped going to school.

The teen said that Sprowson, concerned she would be recognized, kept her from going outside during the day. She said he'd take her out at night, though, with her dressing in a hat, glasses and baggy clothes.

She went on to say that Sprowson had bouts of jealousy, accusing her of having cheated on him. She confessed to having been intimate with him several times, sometimes while she was intoxicated.

The teen has been staying at a behavioral health clinic and said she told her mother that Sprowson hadn't done anything wrong. She also said that since Nov. 1, she has had difficulty reintegrating into society, once considering suicide by jumping off a balcony.

Prosecutors earlier claimed it was discovered the teen contracted a sexually-transmitted disease after her stay with Sprowson.

Sprowson is being held at Clark County Detention Center on charges of kidnapping, child abuse, contributing to the delinquency of a minor and false statements to obstruct a public officer, as well as use of a minor in the production of pornography.

His bail was set at $530,000.
