KURE BEACH, NC (WECT) - The Atlantic waters have been closed to any type of testing for natural resources. The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management is considering allowing for testing off the East Coast.

The Mayor of Kure Beach signed a letter saying he is in support of this testing, and now local ocean protection groups are upset.

The Surfrider Foundation says that seismic testing is dangerous to marine life. The air guns used to test for gas and oil, send blasts of air to the bottom of the ocean which disrupts marine life.

The Cape Fear chapter of this group will hold a rally at Monday's Kure Beach Town Council meeting, which starts at 6:30 p.m.

Mayor Dean Lambeth of Kure Beach says that this testing is not dangerous because there is a marine biologist aboard the testing boat that looks out for whales and other sea creatures.

Lambeth is concerned for the decreasing beach re-nourishment fund. He says allowing for seismic testing will bring funds to North Carolina beaches.

The Surfrider Foundation disagrees. They say protecting our coastal life is key to maintaining Wilmington's tourist economy.
