PHOENIX (CBS5) -

A Phoenix police officer was injured during a traffic stop Saturday morning.

Phoenix police spokesman Sgt. Tommy Thompson said the officer had stopped a pick-up truck at 19th Avenue near Bell road around 10 a.m. for a traffic violation.

Thompson said the officer was about to detain the driver when the man pushed the officer, got back into his truck and drove away.

Witnesses said the man was driving a black pick-up truck with Colorado license plates. He was described as a white man in his 40s with a large dog, possibly a pit bull, in the truck.

The officer wrenched his back during the incident and was taken to a hospital, said Thompson.

The search for the driver is still underway.
