LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

A man linked to the slaying of a child back in 1986 by way of a DNA match has been indicted on several charges including murder with a deadly weapon.

Jasper Goddard, 62, on Thursday was formally charged with burglary, battery, sexual assault with a minor under 16 and murder.

On Nov. 24 1986, someone broke into an apartment near Civic Center Drive and Lake Mead Boulevard in North Las Vegas, kidnapped, sexually assaulted and killed 7-year-old April Rhodes.

Her body was discovered nearby the next day. She had been struck in the head with a brick or cinder block.

In 2012, DNA obtained from the victim was matched to Goddard's, who had been living in Missouri and was a registered sex offender in that state.

It was later discovered that Goddard had lived two apartments down from the victim and her family in 1986.
