A foreign exchange student detained after a man became unresponsive inside a Las Vegas hotel room had his case dismissed in court Thursday.

Matejs Balodis was facing a charge of open murder in connection to the Dec. 16 death of 55-year-old Sherman Dale Lamb.

During Matejs' 72-hour hearing, the case was dismissed and no charges were formally filed against the 22-year-old.

According to Las Vegas Metro police, Balodis was detained by security at South Point hotel-casino on Monday night after reporting Lamb passed out.

In an arrest report, Balodis, a Latvian citizen studying in Denmark, told police he was befriended by Lamb and was offered a hotel room when his flight back to Europe was delayed.

Balodis said things turned sour when it appeared he was being robbed of his money and credit card PIN, documents showed. Police said Balodis told them a fight broke out in a hotel room, where he struck Lamb several times in the head and face.

Balodis was booked into Clark County Detention Center.

An autopsy showed Lamb died of asphyxiation and blunt force trauma of the neck as a result of a homicide.
