A 19-year-old woman is in critical condition after police say her own father shot her in the chest several times. Police say 52-year-old Raul Espinal shot his daughter, then turned the gun on himself.
Police say the shooting happened at 6:15 Tuesday evening at the Regency Heights Apartments on Lake Mead near Pecos. The father was arguing with his daughter because she was trying to convince him not to kill himself, police said.
"There were a few neighbors that heard the shots. They were pretty shocked, too," said neighbor Raul Gamboa. Some of his neighbors heard the argument followed by the sound of at least 5 gun shots ringing out in the courtyard.
Police say Espinal was dead when they arrived.
Other neighbors at the apartment complex said they were shocked to hear about the violence just one week before Christmas.
Las Vegas Metro Police say reports of domestic violence increase during the holiday season.
The pressure to be happy and spend time with family during the holidays can be too stressful for some people, according to Lisa Lynn Chapman, Director of Community Relations at domestic violence shelter, Safe Nest. She says that pressure coupled with the financial burden of buying holiday gifts can add to the problem.
Police said anyone who finds themselves dealing with a suicidal or violent family member should reach out for help instead of trying to handle the situation alone.
Safe Nest is open 24/7, even on Christmas. Their hotline number is (702) 646-498.
The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline is also available 24/7 at 1-800-273-8255.
