Woman struck, killed by light pole in crash identified

Authorities identified a woman who was struck by a falling light pole that was hit by a minivan in the northeast end of Las Vegas.

The Clark County Coroner's Office said Erika Marie Salazar, 35, died from blunt force trauma of the head and neck, among other factors, as a result of an accident.

According to Las Vegas Metro police, Salazar was the pedestrian who died in an incident that took place Monday on Bonanza Road just west of Pecos Road just after 1 p.m.

Police said a Chevy Astro van driven by 69-year-old Felipe Bermejo was traveling eastbound on Bonanza Road when it veered on to the curb, drove up on the sidewalk and struck a street light pole.

The crash caused the pole to hit Salazar who was walking on that sidewalk, police said. The van then got back on the roadway, crossed over into the westbound lanes and struck the north curb, where it also hit two parked cars.

Salazar was pronounced dead at the scene.

The incident marked the 107th traffic-related fatality in Metro's jurisdiction this year.
