LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -
Metro police on Tuesday afternoon called a press conference to discuss the details of a Dec. 9 shooting involving officers.
Hugo Baldovinos, 21, is accused of firing on police following a carjacking at the Terrible Herbst gas station located on West Sahara Avenue at Valley View Boulevard.
Police said they received a call from a store employee reporting the carjacking at 12:32 a.m.
A couple had been robbed of their car and a purse at gunpoint. A short time later, police located the car, a black Ford Focus, near Oakey Boulevard and Arville Street. Officers tried to pull the vehicle over but the driver sped away.
As the Focus approached Desert Inn Road, a passenger began firing at officers from an open window. The car slowed down enough to let a woman, identified as Mirella Valadez, jump from it.
When the Focus pulled into the parking lot of the Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino, an officer rammed his patrol car into the rear quarter panel of the Focus.
The vehicle came to a stop and the driver and his passenger fled on foot. Baldovinos and the driver, identified as Roland Gabaldon, 17, were quickly caught.
Police said the two were armed with .38 caliber handguns when they committed the carjacking. It's believed they fled the scene of the robbery and picked Valadez up at her friend's house.
Gabaldon and Baldovinos were booked into the Clark County Detention Center where they face a long list of charges including attempted murder of a police officer, felony evading police, robbery with a weapon, grand larceny auto and conspiracy.
