LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

A man was wounded Monday night after being shot by a police officer on University Avenue near Mojave Road.

The shooting was reported about 9:40 p.m.

Police said they received a call from a concerned roommate after a man, identified in a police report as Jose Aguilar, tried to commit suicide by injecting himself with dog insulin.

When officers arrived, Aguilar came out of the house holding a shotgun, the report stated.

According to police, officers told him to put down the gun, which he did. When police tried to take him into custody, though, he grabbed for the gun, prompting an officer to open fire, police said.

Aguilar was shot in the lower part of his body. He was rushed to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. He was listed in stable condition.

Police said no one else was injured in the incident.
