The longtime leader of the Southern Nevada Water Authority announced Thursday that she will retire from her position in early February.

In September, SNWA and Las Vegas Valley Water District General Manager Pat Mulroy announced her plans to retire in early 2014, but she did not give an exact date.

On Thursday, Mulroy sent a letter to the SNWA Board of Directors, in which she outlined her plan to end her tenure at midnight Feb. 6, 2014. However, Mulroy said that if an authority board meeting is necessary in February, she will move her resignation date to Feb. 20.

"In accordance with the interagency agreement governing how the district and its general manager oversee the operations of the Southern Nevada Water Authority, the district's role as managing partner terminates with my resignation," Mulroy wrote in her letter.

During her 25 years as leader of the two water agencies, Mulroy has overseen the increase in water rights for southern Nevada. She also championed the installation of two more straws into Lake Mead, which feed water to the Las Vegas Valley.

In her letter, Mulroy said the incredible leadership displayed by the boards of both water agencies helped overcome unprecedented challenges.

"The challenges will not disappear," Mulroy wrote in her closing sentence, "but I am confident that your continued stewardship of our most precious resource will not be compromised and will become the bedrock of a bright new economic future for the entire region."
