Metro police on Tuesday identified the two people taken into custody following a long standoff at a Las Vegas apartment complex Monday night as William Gardner, 30, and Brittany Ulmer, 24.

Police said members of the U.S. Marshal's Service Task Force located Gardner, wanted in connection with a slaying in California, about 4:40 p.m. Monday.

They tracked him to the Camden Apartments complex located on Tropicana Avenue near Mountain Vista Street where, marshals said, he refused to exit a unit.

While negotiating with Gardner, they learned there was another man, a woman and a small child inside the apartment.

Police said Gardner and Ulmer refused to come out of the apartment but the still unidentified man quickly surrendered.

Several hours later, Ulmer walked out of the apartment with her child and surrendered to officers.

Gardner gave up and came out of the apartment about 12:40 a.m. Tuesday. He surrendered peacefully, police said.

Gardner was booked into the Clark County Detention Center on charges of being a fugitive from another state, a felony.

Ulmer was booked for obstructing a public officer.

During the standoff, Sacramento TV station KOVR reported Gardner called the station.

Gardner was wanted in connection with the Nov. 18 slaying of his girlfriend in Winters, CA, according to that city's police department.

FOX5 on Tuesday spoke to two men who live in the apartment. Both wished to remain anonymous and said Gardner didn't seem like a threat to them.

"He was here to paint the wall. He wasn't staying here," a roommate said.

The two said they had only just met Gardner on the street and asked him to paint a wall in their apartment as they are preparing to move.

"What the paper is saying and what we've seen are two different things, because the dude was cool, calm and [collected]," an anonymous roommate said.

"You know, he was down on his luck and we figured we could help him and he could help us," a roommate said.

When U.S. marshals spotted Gardner, he ran into the apartment.

"He just came in and said he was in trouble," a roommate said.

"He sat around pacing for a minute and got his thoughts together," the other roommate said.

One of the roommates we spoke with left the apartment during the early stage of the standoff, leaving Gardner, Ulmer and her child inside.

"Nobody was [held] against their will," that roommate said. "When he came, he didn't brandish no weapons and nobody was wrapped up or [held] hostage."

"I didn't know he was what he was. I thought his name was Michael Alexander. That's what he told me. Said he was from Oakland," a roommate said.
