Las Vegas Metro Police released the names of three officers who were involved in the shooting of a man, they said, was armed with rifles and a handgun during a confrontation.
Officer Paul Kunz, Officer Justin Marzec and Officer Joshua Giese were identified as the Metro policemen who responded to an armed man at the Mountain Vista Apartments early Saturday morning, authorities said.
According to police, officers were called to the apartments at 3950 S. Mountain Vista St. about 2 a.m. after several disconnected 911 calls from family members who said their son was suicidal and wanted to provoke a confrontation with police by starting a mass shooting.
Sgt. John Sheahan of Metro police said that when officers arrived, they confronted the man who was armed with two rifles and a handgun. He said that the man then pointed one of the rifles at officers, who opened fire. He said the man was wounded, and taken to Sunrise Hospital for treatment, where he died.
In addition, police said it appeared some shots were fired before officers arrived, but there were no injuries from those shots.
According to Metro, Kunz, 28, and Marzec, 29, have been with the department since 2007 while Giese, 28, was first hired with Metro in 2006. The three officers were placed on paid administrative leave pending an investigation.
