LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

The office of the Clark County district attorney claims to have made a disturbing discovery about the Las Vegas kindergarten teacher accused of kidnapping a runaway teen.

It claims Melyvn Sprowson, 45, had a history of sexual misconduct in California before being hired by the Clark County School District.

District Attorney Steve Wolfson said his investigators discovered this Monday and that it will help his office prosecute Sprowson. According to Wolfson, Los Angeles police were looking into Sprowson back in 2007 in connection with allegations of inappropriate contact with students.

Now, local parents are asking how the school district failed to turn up this information during its background check.

"We just received this information today, and I think it's pretty telling about Mr. Sprowson, and I believe it's going to be, perhaps, a case breaker," Wolfson said.

Sprowson is accused of kidnapping a 16-year-old teen runaway and giving her a sexually transmitted disease.

"Cases don't necessarily end when somebody is arrested. Investigations continue, and sometimes during that period of time, you learn more information about an individual," Wolfson said.

While Wolfson wouldn't get into details, a source told FOX5 that in 2007, police reports were filed in Los Angeles indicating Sprowson was accused of touching five or six female students ranging in age from 10 to 12.

The news came as a shock to parents, who wonder how Sprowson was able to land a job teaching at Wengert Elementary.

"They need to go back in their records and check out some more to see if there's any more in the area," parent Tracy Lehrer said.

"Why did he get hired over here? Something's wrong," parent Myrnalynn Valenzuela added.

The Clark County School District released a statement Monday, saying, "Because no charges were formally filed against Sprowson for his inappropriate actions in Los Angeles involving minors, it wouldn't show up on a CCSD background check."

Although Sprowson wasn't prosecuted in Los Angeles, Wolfson said his alleged actions could affect his case in Las Vegas.

"I don't think charges are going to be brought by our jurisdiction, but you can still use the information. If the case goes to trial, it can be relevant information to present to a jury," he said.
