LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

The hoop, base and pole were carried away in broad daylight, and it was all captured on surveillance video.

It was among the RISE Education Resource Center's prized possessions, and the nonprofit church, meeting and classroom facility said it was about much more than basketball.

Two thieves walked away with the property from the school, located on Rancho Drive near Gowan Road, on Nov. 11.

Basketball is more than a game to students - it's a way for them to have fun and get to know one another.

"Grown men who probably have jobs stealing from kids. It's teaching our children this lesson. It's not OK, and we're not going to stand for it," said RISE Education Center President Elissa Wahl.

Wahl is working hard to get the basketball system back, blasting surveillance video over social media.

"It's awful that the basketball hoop was stolen. It's really awful that someone would walk on a church property, where they know kids are playing with it, and walk off with it," Wahl said.

Nicholas Zink, 15, donated the equipment to the school two years ago.

"I brought it here because I thought there would be better use for it, not just me," Nicholas said.

Nicholas normally comes to school early to play basketball with his friends. He said the game brought younger and older students together.

"[I'm] irritated. Wish that they wouldn't have done it," he said.

The center has two other basketball systems, but they are in disrepair.

"It really feels like this was targeted, like we are going to go after the one in excellent shape and we're going to take it," Wahl said.

Wahl said the theft couldn't have come at a worse time. On Friday, the church and school will hold its Give Back to RISE fundraiser. Students often ask for basketballs and other sports equipment.

"On our wish list this year are more basketballs. Funnily enough, now we don't have a basketball hoop," Wahl said.

Nicholas said he's saving money for a new hoop, base and pole.

Anyone with information about the theft is asked to contact the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department.

RISE provides educational and social events for homes-schooled and charter-schooled students.
