LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -
A cancer survivor's only wish was recently shattered by thieves.
Tonapah native Michael McLaughlin was diagnosed with leukemia in 2010. The then 18-year-old was supposed to be gifted a truck makeover through the Kids Wish Network.
On Wednesday night, someone stole the parts to his truck in Las Vegas.
The Scorpion Motor Sports Owner Dino Martinez was outfitting McLaughlin's Ford Ranger to turn it into a pre-runner. McLaughlin finished his last chemo treatment last month.
"I didn't know if I would get the car done in time for him," said Martinez. "It looked like every day was going to matter. He was very ill and in a wheelchair. He couldn't keep his head up. I lost my mom to cancer I took it very personal and I wanted to make it happen."
Martinez was set to deliver it to McLaughlin for Christmas. On Wednesday night, thieves stole four tires and wheels from its locks.
Martinez said they're valued at more than $5,000.
"I wanted to throw up," said Martinez. "I felt sick. I just felt angry and very upset."
"I've seen pictures of it," McLaughlin. "I can't wait to get it but with this, it sucks. No one deserves to be stolen from them and in this case it was me."
Martinez hopes to find the culprits and get the parts back, so he can still make McLaughlin's wish come true.
"To me there's nothing worse than someone that's going to take away something that doesn't belong to them, especially a deserving project," said Martinez.
The tires are General Grabber red letter tires and the wheels are Ultra brand. Martinez is reviewing surveillance video from a nearby business.
Anyone with information is encouraged to call Metro police. The wish was made possible through the Kids Wish Network.
The Kids Wish Network is a nonprofit based out of Florida that grants wishes for children between the ages of 3 and 18 who have life-threatening illnesses.
