Red Cross activates family tracking system in wake of typhoon

PHOENIX (CBS5) -

In the wake of super Typhoon Haiyan, lines of communication are almost non-existent. As rescue workers targeted the hardest hit areas Sunday, many in the United States tried in vain to reach their loved ones in the Philippines.

"We just really sympathize with the families here and asking them for their patience is just very hard to do," said American Red Cross Grand Canyon Chapter volunteer Todd Tamcsin.

Tamcsin said the organization has activated the family tracking system.

"Starting on Tuesday we'll be able to actually open cases for families here who have loved ones in the Philippines who are trying to learn about their whereabouts and welfare," said Tamcsin.

Families in the Valley can call 602-336-6660.

"The more information we have the better we can narrow down where they may be and what shelters they may be located in," said Tamcsin.
